Volunteers Needed For Trail Run

Postby Farmboy » Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:35 am

As some of you know we are hosting a Trail Run Race on 8/9/09 for the Cedar Rapids Running Club along with Lisa Paulos. We are going to need volunteers on Saturday evening for course marking and on Sunday morning for parking, course marshalling, and for the many other misc. issues we are going to run into. I already have a small list of people but am wondering if we can get a few more.

Here's what we have so far:

Steve Levi
Steve (OnlyInAJeep)
Elaine
Chad DeMers
Jerica
Noel
Brad (Jaxon)
Rob Lanz

The race starts at 7:30. It is my understanding that Steve Levi and Rob Lanz are already volunteered for parking and can get there early. So other holes to fill are:

Course Marking Saturday Evening: Need people who know the trails

Course Marshalling: need 8-10 people to control intersections

Setup Sunday Morning:

Clean Up Saturday afternoon:

This event will be a great opportunity to showcase to the community what we have done at Beverly Park and what we are capable of. Please consider giving a short amount of time to this event.

Not sure if you prefer a PM or a response here. I can help with the course marking. More details on the duties of clean up, setup and marshalling would be great to help choosing.

a response here would be great. I hope to not have too much to do on Sunday morning for setup, but it's hard to predict everything of course. To be safe, I'd like to have people there for setup starting at around 6-6:30. Set up tables and easyups, parking, prepare start and finish area, doublecheck course markings and intersection control for anything that may have fallen down or needs tweaking.

Clean up should be minimal. I plan to pull my BOB trailer around with trash bags to clean up course markings and trash.

May need a sweep rider too at the end of each event to check the course for injured, incapacitated, and / or deceased people.

The run should be over be 9am. Whole thing should be wrapped up well before noon.

Re: Course Marshals Needed For Trail Run

Another important job we need people to do at the race is ride or walk to key trail intersections to direct runners in the right direction and make sure that they don't take short cuts. These are what they call "course marshals" (sounds powerful doesn't it!) I'm getting some arrows made to hold but you'll have to bring your own badge if you want to look like a cop  .

As you ride this week be sure to keep the trails clear of sticks. I've been out spraying poison ivy and heading over to weed wack this am.

Thanks to everyone who is helping out.

This is great. Thanks to all the volunteers. Could maybe use a couple more.

We all need to be there by around 6:30 or so. The race starts at 7:30. I'll bring coffee.

What time is the course marking the night before the race? We might also have to do some pruning and picking up branches while we're at it.

I was thinking around 6pm. That way most of Saturday's users are done riding. We could have a little fun on bikes when we're done and have a beer or go get a beer.

I'm open to suggestions.

Chris, I think we both could do without another donut, but I'll bring 'em anyways.

I'll be at Beverly at around 5:30pm to start marking the course. Any help would be appreciated.

farmboy asked me to post this for him...

Attention all the volunteers that agreed to help tom. morning...
There are a lot of things that still need done. Could you move up your timeline and try and get to Beverly at 6am instead of 6:30am? If it is not possible for you to get there at this earlier time, don't beat yourself up, the rest of us will do our best to get everything done.\

Thank you.

Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful, but a huge thanks to all of you who helped pull off the trail run this morning. You are the best!!!! LAMBA was a great host and the runners I talked to said they had a great time and would like to have this event again. Since I was out of the loop I can't detail all the effort that all the people put in, but it was appreciated. The grandson of the farmer who sold Beverly to CR (Dan Mineke) was there to start the race and get kudos.

FYI I had my 40th high school reunion this weekend with friends from both coasts and 3 nights partying til 3 am .( Major fun but not good for running a 7:30am race however. Thank you Noel for taking over the work, and Lisa Paulos - race organizer, for sticking with it. Thanks you also Steve (only in a Jeep) and your wife for help with lay out . LLL (Long live LAMBA).

P.S. My friends love the park.

It did all come together pretty well. I learned a lot about getting our trails ready which will come in handy for future events.

Lisa did all of the leg work with the city, sponsors, and timing. Her and I sat down a couple times to plan the course. We made revisions that would make the course both challenging and fun. We got a lot of compliments on the course, so I was happy about that.

Lisa, Steve (onlyinajeep), Deb (Steve's wife), Elaine, and myself met at Beverly last night to tape off the course. This is a longer process than you might think. In the future we should plan for a minimum of four hours with 6 people that know the trail and the course well. Steve and Deb did an absolutely fantastic job on the interior trails, while Lisa and I focused on other parts of the trail. One thing also that came in handy is ground marking paint. I painted several arrows to clear up anything that may have been confusing and Steve used it to mark some barely visible obstacles.

On Sunday morning the following LAMBA members showed up to help.

Steve and Deb (after being there for 4 hours Saturday night. Please thank them)
Chris George
Rob and Elaine Lanz (Elaine was there for 2 hours Saturday night as well)
Chad Demers
Jim Pettinari (Barkleyfan)
Jerrica Gritsch
Scott Devore
Steve Levi
Eric Ellis
Rob Johnson (it was obvious he was less than 100% so we gave him a short speaking role and cut him loose :D )

(I don't think I forgot anyone, but please let me know if I did).

The amount of support from these people was amazing to me especially considering how hot it was and how early in the morning we all had to get there to make it happen. They payoff was in all the grins on people's faces as they ran through the singletrack and the positive comments we received at the end of the event. Lisa and Steve Levi had sense enough to ask for feedback from participants in a formal written manner. We'll get those comments when Lisa makes them available.

Thanks to all of you who helped out today. I think we more than accomplished what we wanted to. We showed that we can put an a top notch event and we were able to showcase the trail system that we have all worked very hard to create.

Noel
