LAMBA Website design

LAMBA Website design

Postby NoyzSource » Mon Aug 03, 2009 6:38 pm

I'm going to be installing a new website layout sometime and was looking for the information that would need to be put on the front page. I was looking at a 3 column template for Wordpress.

I haven't figured out the exact column layout though. The options are:
Left Middle Right
Small Big Little
Big Little Little

Small, big, little is one I've used before on http://somersaultsstars.com
It would also be similar to http://qcforc.org but it would not be a fixed width and the news would be allowed to scroll off the bottom of the page.
Facebook also follows the 3 column layout with the most dynamic information in the middle column.
My website http://jillanderic.net has a two column layout.

I'm leaning toward the Small, Big, Little.
The left column would be trail status and upcoming events (ala qcforc) including a link to the google calendar and ical integration.
The middle column would be the articles and longer posts we want to put in and pull attention to.
The right column would include the links to the standard items we use:
Membership form.
Trail layout maps.
Page per park.
Page with links to other clubs.
Links to our pages on facebook, google groups, and other places we come up with.

I tend to go for minimalist themes if you couldn't tell. Minimal pictures, get to the content. I want to reuse the image from the current header so the new color scheme will be very similar to the current web page. Make the header smaller to get the content closer to the top of the screen. This should help maximize screen real estate on netbooks and mobile devices. A Wordpress based site will also give us RSS feeds for pushing news to users.

What are you ideas for things that need to be on the website?

I like the layout on the mockup. Here are my thoughts, in no particular order:

Putting the trail conditions right on the front page will be helpful, as will the extended list of upcoming events (that I can make it to now!)

I like the title graphic from the current site, keeping it would be cool.

Would having some sort of user-submitted trail damage form be useful? A casual user who sees a tree down or notices a washout might not want to go to the trouble of creating a forum account to post the info.

A picture of the park or LAMBA related pictures would be colorful of the Home Page.
I agree about the trial condition notification.
There is always someplace in the world dry enough for kick'n up a little dirt.

I forgot to add that you can also call the LAMBA phone number and leave a message after the beep to submit trail issues.

I could possibly help with some photo editing stuff/or design stuff I'm decent at it. I agree we should definitely have a section for photos of the park, a google maps link of how to get there, and of course trail conditions and link to the forum all right on the main page. I like the current main page enough, but it could be better, glad you're keeping things up to date.

I told Noel I wasn't going to mess with it anymore until Sunday but Friday I just switched the site (then left town again like a high paid IT guy should do).

There will be lots of little tweaks and widgets changing/appearing/disappearing over the next few years while I get the hang of it. :)

Still looking for more suggestions though.

One suggestion I have is to put a link to the FORUM on that top bar alongside: Home, about, exec, etc, although I know the link is on the far right above the RSS feed, the Forum is such an important part of the website I think it would be nice to have one of those big links, I found myself searching for the link the other day.

Would not be bad if it was even in BOLD :)

The links at the top of the page are required to go to another Wordpress page. Then on that page you can link to where you want to go. I installed a widget that allows a full redirection there. I need to tell Sean about it with ICORR.

I wonder what they are having problems with?

LAMBAonline.com redirects to LAMBAonline.org so it may not like the redirect. This is only valid if you originally tried to get there via .com

the forum is still on the .com site until I change it over. I won't do that yet until we're sure the .org stuff will work for people.

can you go to http://lambaonline.org/forum/ and get to the forum on the .com? It should be a redirect.

I actually installed a Firefox plugin called LeechBlock to curb my "non-working" work hours on certain websites.

Facebook
LAMBA Forum
Google Reader

Interestingly, my productivity went up. :)
