Indoor Riding - Winter '09

All ideas have merit here...

Postby Ken » Tue Nov 11, 2008 12:03 pm

I was wondering about the contamination issue, perhaps many of these places are not safe for occupancy of any kind - a problem too big for us to solve I think.

There is the Boys & Girls Club in the Time Check area, also the Time Check Recreation Center and a Methodist church - St. James. 1st Street has tons of closed businesses, like Mautz Paint, but maybe contamination is an issue there as well.

It doesn't have to be too big, just a place to keep the skills sharp over the winter, heck, an empty garage would be better than nothing.

Either way, we should start contacting the owners of these places, just to investigate the idea...

What about that sign company Cole used to work at on 1st st. That would be a great sized building.

I am shure they want a ton of money for there. Plus it was not very water tight the roof leaked like mad! I mean like crazy leaks when it rains.

If we get 20-30 people committed, it'd be ~50/month or less to ride...
but that's probably the hard part... lol

How about property taxes, insurance....

Plus, that's pretty small. 3200 ft sq is about the size of your average Subway restaurant.

Bartunek's warehouse near Iron Horse

Postby whistlepig » Thu Nov 13, 2008 2:15 pm

I called the Bartuneks about their warehouse, a 40x 50 building on a large lot near the Chrome Horse. Probably won't happen this winter because they are using for storing a couple of vehicles. Sounds promising maybe for next winter. 2000 Sq feet aint much . . .

There was a building downtown a few years ago that had a pool hall in the front and a skatepark in the back, the pool hall was called hotshots, owned by the same guy that opened the one up by the same name over on Johnson ave. quite a few years ago. They charged people a few bucks to get in, etc., but they closed down.

I know the building definitely has enough space, I don't know if it would still be for rent though. It might be worth looking into, I'll see if I can get some more info on it.

edit:

Ok the address is:

712 2nd Ave SE
Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52403
United States

Corner of 7th st. and 2nd ave is the entrance, it definitely looked abandoned, but I didn't actually see any for rent signs, but it was dark. It also used to be called Emerald City, I think hotshots was just the poolhall.

Oh, and here I found a link of it and some details on it:

get yer build on

Anyone have access to building materials and expertise? We could begin assembly of modular units that could be placed together into pump tracks, rearranged for different flow, etc.

Better yet, what specific moves to you think would be good to master this winter? What sorts of structures do you need to ride on to master said moves / tricks?

That sounds like it could be some fun, bowls were always fun to ride on a skateboard, even though I sucked at it. Never tried em on a bike though.

Wow!!
Some cities are just way to cool!! I was impressed w/ what looked like a very well planned and organized event.

I would be surprised if none of those glass doors that opened toward the direction of the riders didn't get hit at least once.
There is always someplace in the world dry enough for kick'n up a little dirt.
FIND IT AND LET THE REST OF US KNOW!
