Squaw Creek Workday April 1st 9am.

1 mile of singletrack, 3 more in the works...

Squaw Creek Workday April 1st 9am.

Who wants more trails? Well, here's our shot.

After much deliberation, the official Squaw Creek Workday will be Sunday April 1st. We will begin working at 9am. The attached photo shows the new section. Most of it is flagged at the park now. This is going to be a ton of work as there is a lot of deadfall, thicket, and brush. I figure we'll need about 30 people to complete this trail to where I've noted below. If we do get to this point, we'll open a connector on each end until the last part of this section is complete. I do not want an additional connection to the multi trail at this time.

Here's what I think we'll need.

20 people: 4 IMBA trained trail builders to be working leads for groups of 4 people using mcleods and loppers. Those 4 working leads will take a section of trail and build according to the flagged trail. The leads are granted discretion to tweak as needed.

2 people on brush cutters perhaps 3 if we can call in a favor from ICORR.

3 people on chainsaws.

The rest to do whatever might come up.

Please volunteer here and put in whatever time you can. If we do this well and do it right, there are a lot of opportunities in front of us with Linn County.

I have it on my calendar. I can't wait to have more trail at Squaw...so much closer than driving down to Beverly for a quick ride. I'll be there with a cooler full of, "hell yes", and a smile.

Can I get a rollcall going here?

Who's coming. You don't need to post if you're not coming. If you're not going to be there I don't need to plan for what I'm going to have you do that day.

I should be there as well, anyone riding up from Iowa City should let me know and we can carpool.

Another bump for this workday. ILT and I spent about 4 more hours each out there today flagging more trail. The flagging part is almost done. Either way, we'll be ready to start knocking it out on Sunday. Just so everybody knows, full disclosure:

1. The high on Sunday is going to be in the 80's. I recommend camelbaks. Drink plenty of water.
2. Regardless of the temps, I suggest wearing pants, long sleeves, and gloves. We're going through some thick stuff that includes thorns.
3. Bug spray is recommended as well. The skeeters and ticks will be out.
4. There is a lot of deadfall to clear. The mowers and chainsaws will get a workout this weekend.
5. At no point in the flagging of this trail has the right line been sacrificed due to the work entailed in clearing it. Once the corridor is cleared, the dirt will be perfect for trail building.

Hope to see you all out there. This trail is going to rawk.

Farmboy,
You getting verbal or emails on a headcount, b/c I'm not seeing anywhere near the numbers you where hoping for?

Getting both. Looking at about 15 people so far including some folks who don't frequent the forum and some ICORR folks.

This song is in my head, but with the word Squaw replacing the word bird...

I second that. Thanks to everyone that helped out. After lunch Urbanbigfoot and I spent a couple more hours out there flagging. We have enough flagged in to get to a point where we could connect to the existing blue loop. Another day of flagging and a chainsaw party could set us up nicely to wrap the whole thing up though. We'll discuss dates and get another workday scheduled.
